Edgar Bautista

After graduating in IMAT and completing two intensive internships at two German companies in the field of renewable energies with a specialization in solar power, I found very good opportunities to continue my career in the areas I focused on during my IMAT courses.

 

I work in the field of concentrated solar power generation at an international company, which is active in technology, power plant engineering and financing of large-scale solar power plants worldwide. I support project development, power plant construction and access to new solar-electricity markets.

We work in the integration of solar thermal collectors to conventional power plants and hybridization of renewable power generation. We develop solutions for emerging economies to let them put a step forward towards sustainable electricity generation. This is closely related to economic and environmental policies, thus we often work together with Governments and Energy Ministries to speed up technology deployment depending on the energy demand forecasts and the share of renewable energy they pursue.

I wrote my first master thesis about smart grids and the integration of renewable energy sources to achieve a balanced energy mix. I focused thereafter on solar power plants and seawater desalination: an application with high potential that will impact economic development in many regions soon. My theses advisors guided this research through critical topics that integrate engineering of renewable energies and economics.

We face today complex systems where technology and economic feasibility play a significant role, hence finding an optimum solution for sustainable power generation makes use of interdisciplinary knowledge. The variables in our equation comprise applied technique (available solar resource and power plant sizing per site), macroeconomics (competitive electricity prices and energy sufficiency) and environmental criteria (safe access to energy, water supply and emissions abatement).
