German-Japanese Dual Degree Programme

The Ritsumeikan Asia Pacific University (APU) was inaugurated in April 2000 as Japan´s first genuine international university. APU has grown considerably since then resulting in half of the students and faculty members currently originating from over 80 countries and regions throughout the world. The university is fully recognized by the Japanese Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology (MEXT) and received a "Good Practice" award from MEXT in recent years for its unique initiatives in bilingual study programmes and in the promotion of student mobility.

APU is situated in Beppu City, one of Japan´s most popular international tourist destinations. As the second largest city in Oita Prefecture in Southern Japan, Beppu boasts a rich traditional onsen (hot spring) culture and has recently enjoyed a period of rapid internationalization. For APU students, Beppu is their home-away-from-home. Over 11 million visitors come to Beppu every year to experience some of the 2,200 hot spring sources and eight renowned “Beppu Hatto” onsens. Producing over 83,000 liters of hot spring water every minute, Beppu is the number one hot spring source in Japan.

With a population of approximately 120,000, Beppu City is the second largest city in the prefecture, after Oita City, and hosts approximately 4,000 international students. Beppu City continues to enjoy a reputation as one of Japan’s leading international exchange cities, in fact almost 1 in 30 residents in Beppu is an international student. Oita Prefecture in Southern Japan.

For its students APU operates a structured career support programme from the first study year to graduation. Over 90 % of all graduates seeking work in Japan received a job offer. The APU Alumni Association was founded in 2003, and will take advantage of APU´s diverse student body in the future to extend its reach all over the world.
